Great dancers are those who go beyond the body and express from their heart. It takes more than muscle control to make complex dance movements look effortless. It takes daily practice and consistent dedication. Just like an athlete relentlessly pursues certain practices to perfect skills, a dancer needs to pursue practices on a regular basis to perfect the art. Take a look at some of our suggestions below to improve your dancing.
Stretch to Relieve Stress
The more you stretch each part of your body, the more your muscles expand, your flexibility develops and you reduce the risk of injury. Stretch on an empty stomach, at least an hour before meals, several times a day.
Dance is a visual art form. Dancers are known to be fashionable, or trendsetters. To be supple, the outfits need to be as flexible as the body. Wear comfortable clothes that let you move freely while practicing. Leotards, tights, t-shirts and proper dance shoes allow easy movement that protects working muscles. The more you work on your moves, the more confident you will feel while performing.
Ear for Music
Dancers have a natural sense of rhythm. Their ears are attuned to music. If you are starting out, no matter what your age, it is important to listen to different forms of music to perfect your art. Don’t just listen to songs in the background. Get a feel for them. Hear the lyrics and absorb them until they mean something to you. Close the door to the outside world and go deep within. Move with the music, in step with the rhythm. This is a fantastic way to develop your musical abilities. Keep an open mind and hear different genres of music to grow your understanding.
Watch YouTube Videos
In the same vein, watch more dance videos on YouTube. Study the choreography and practice those that touch a chord with you. Learning new moves will help you pick up new steps easily. Use them in your choreography routine or in social situations such as dance parties. Go out of your comfort zone and work in different styles. A great dancer has the ability to dance with any style and any kind of music. It also helps you develop your physical and mental abilities.
A healthy diet is mandatory for strong dance moves. A good dancer is light footed because the muscles are toned. Eat sensibly. Overeating or starving will not nourish your body. Instead, you may feel heavy or exhausted while performing. Don’t cut out carbs. They give you energy and fuel the muscles. Protein powers the cells. If you are vegan or vegetarian, increase your intake of protein through nuts, grains, lentils and supplements. Fats are necessary to keep you healthy too. Have a balanced, nutritious diet and avoid energy depleting junk food or sugary drinks.
